Naha was the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom for around 450 years, and the city's rich history and distinctive culture — a blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences — is still palpable today. The reconstructed Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands at the city's symbolic heart. The 1.6-kilometre Kokusai-dori street is the place for Okinawan food and souvenirs, while the Makishi Public Market offers an authentic taste of the island's culinary traditions. Naha is also the hub for flights to Okinawa's outlying islands — Ishigaki, Miyako, and Kumejima — making it an ideal base for the broader Okinawa archipelago.

Shuri Castle — a World Heritage Ryukyu palace
The royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 14th to 19th centuries, Shuri Castle was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa and later reconstructed. The vivid red main hall (Seiden) is an iconic symbol of Okinawa, blending Chinese and Japanese architectural styles in a uniquely Ryukyuan way.
Kokusai-dori — the mile of miracles
Naha's main shopping and dining street stretches 1.6 kilometres through the city centre. Sample Okinawan soba, goya champuru, and sata andagi (fried doughnuts), and browse for awamori (Okinawan spirits), Ryukyu glass, and shisa lion dogs. Evenings bring lively izakaya dining.
Makishi Public Market — the kitchen of Okinawa
Spread around Kokusai-dori, the Makishi Public Market is a vibrant hub of Okinawan food culture. The ground floor sells tropical fish, island vegetables, umibudo (sea grapes), and pork products unique to Okinawa. Take your purchases upstairs to the restaurant floor to have them cooked to order (service charge from ¥400).
Gateway to the remote islands — Ishigaki, Miyako & more
Naha Airport is the hub for direct flights to Okinawa's outlying islands: Ishigaki (approx. 1 hour), Miyako (approx. 45 minutes), and Kumejima (approx. 30 minutes). Day trips or short stays on the remote islands are easily combined with a Naha base.
Use the Naha 1-day itinerary as your base and add side trips to Ishigaki or Miyako island. tabimaru makes it easy to build your perfect Okinawa trip.

The royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Gusuku Sites). The castle was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and reconstructed in the 1990s. The striking red Seiden main hall is decorated with Chinese and Japanese architectural motifs unique to Ryukyu. A 15-minute walk from Yui Rail Shuri Station. Admission to the main hall ¥830 (some areas free).
11:30–13:00
Naha's main drag — a lively 1.6-kilometre street lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafés. Great for Okinawan soba, goya champuru, tacos rice, and sata andagi (local fried doughnuts). Also the place to stock up on Okinawan awamori spirits, Ryukyu glassware, and hand-painted shisa lion figurines. Nearest stations: Yui Rail Makishi or Kencho-mae.
14:00–15:00
Just off Kokusai-dori, the Makishi Public Market is Okinawa's most celebrated food market. The ground floor is piled high with colourful tropical fish, sea grapes (umibudo), island vegetables, and pork products unlike anything seen on the Japanese mainland. You can buy your picks at the ground floor stalls and have them cooked in the second-floor restaurants for a small fee (from ¥400 per dish). An authentic and lively Okinawan experience.

15:00–16:00
South of Kokusai-dori, the Tsuboya district is the historic centre of Okinawan pottery (yachimun). The cobblestone Yachimun Street is lined with workshops, galleries, and cafés selling earthy red Okinawan ceramics with bold, colourful designs. A peaceful contrast to the bustle of Kokusai-dori, and a good place to find a handmade souvenir.
16:00–17:00
The only natural beach within Naha city, about 15 minutes on foot from Yui Rail Asahibashi Station. A surprisingly clear stretch of Okinawan sea in the middle of the city. Adjacent Naminoue Shrine — the oldest shrine in Naha — sits dramatically on the clifftop above the beach. Showers and changing rooms available in summer.
18:00–19:00
Okinawa has a strong steak culture inherited from the American military era — you can get a surprisingly large, quality steak at very reasonable prices. Alternatively, settle in at an izakaya on or around Kokusai-dori for Okinawan staples: rafute (slow-braised pork belly), tofu champuru, and a glass of awamori. A great way to round off the day.
