Soak up Kyoto classics at Kiyomizudera & Gion
The Higashiyama area — with its sweeping views from Kiyomizudera's stage, the cobblestoned slopes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and the willow-lined canal in Gion — is the perfect base for Day 1. Arrive early to enjoy the serene atmosphere before the crowds.
Arashiyama's bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge
The soaring moso bamboo of Arashiyama's bamboo path creates an otherworldly atmosphere, while Tenryuji temple's garden — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — frames the surrounding mountains in a stunning composition. The path is free and open 24 hours, so an early morning visit is magical.
Northern Kyoto: Kitano Tenmangu & Kinkakuji
Kitano Tenmangu, dedicated to the scholar deity Sugawara no Michizane, is famous for its plum blossoms and autumn foliage. Nearby Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion) — reflected in Kyokochi pond — is breathtaking. The two combine perfectly for an efficient afternoon on Day 2.
Wrap up with Toji and Nishiki Market
Toji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Kyoto Station, is dominated by Japan's tallest wooden pagoda (55m) — ideal for the journey home. 'Kyoto's Kitchen' — Nishiki Market — is packed with Kyoto pickles, obanzai small dishes, and matcha sweets for a great final shopping stop.
