Reflect on peace at the Peace Memorial Park & Museum
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum conveys the devastating impact of the 1945 atomic bombing through artefacts, photos, and survivor testimonies. The surrounding park is home to memorials including the Cenotaph, the Children's Peace Monument, and the Flame of Peace. Allow at least 1–2 hours for the museum.
Stand before the Atomic Bomb Dome — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The dome-shaped skeleton of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, which miraculously survived the atomic bomb blast in 1945, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The view from across the Motoyasu River is especially striking. It's just a short walk from the Peace Memorial Park.
Marvel at the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine
The giant torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, which appears to float on the sea at high tide, is one of the most iconic images in Japan. The vermilion-painted shrine complex, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is reflected beautifully in the water. At low tide, you can walk right up to the base of the torii gate.
End the day with Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki — the city's soul food
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is built up in layers — cabbage, noodles, and egg — and cooked on an iron griddle. Okonomimura in Shintenchi is a multi-storey building packed with okonomiyaki restaurants, where locals and tourists alike crowd around the griddles for this beloved local dish.
