HOKKAIDO / HAKODATE

Hakodate 2-Night 3-Day Itinerary

Night Views, Morning Market, Goryokaku & the Historic Western District

One of Japan's most distinctive cities — explore Hakodate's legendary night view from Mt. Hakodate, the lively morning seafood market, star-shaped Goryokaku fort, and the Meiji-era Western district in 3 days.

SCROLL

Hakodate sits at the very tip of the Oshima Peninsula in southern Hokkaido, shaped by the sea on both sides. It holds a unique place in Japanese history as one of the first ports to open to foreign trade in the 1850s, and that heritage lives on in the Western-style churches, consulates, and Meiji-era buildings of the Motomachi district. The city is also famous for Mt. Hakodate's night view — ranked among the world's most beautiful — and for the lively morning seafood market that opens at dawn by Hakodate Station. Goryokaku, Japan's first Western-style fort and the site of the final battle of the Boshin War, completes a city that is rich in both natural beauty and history.

ここが狙い目

Mt. Hakodate's night view — one of the world's great night panoramas

From the 334m summit of Mt. Hakodate, the city's distinctive shape — a narrow strip of land with sea on both sides — creates one of the most dramatic night views anywhere in the world. The ropeway takes just 3 minutes to the top. Arriving before sunset lets you watch the city transform as darkness falls.

Sea urchin and salmon roe rice bowls at the Hakodate Morning Market

Hakodate Morning Market opens around 6am, just steps from JR Hakodate Station. Hundreds of stalls sell fresh sea urchin, salmon roe, hairy crab, scallops, and squid — the best of Hokkaido's waters. Don't miss the seafood rice bowl restaurants in the dedicated Donburi Yokocho Market area.

Goryokaku — the site of Japan's last samurai battle

Completed in 1866, Goryokaku was Japan's first Western-style fortification and the final battleground of the Boshin War. The Goryokaku Tower offers a bird's-eye view of the star-shaped fort — a truly spectacular sight. In spring, about 1,600 cherry trees bloom inside the moat.

Stroll through Motomachi for Meiji-era Western architecture

The hillside Motomachi and Nishibu (Western) districts are dotted with churches, consulates, and merchant houses from the Meiji and Taisho periods. The Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall, Hakodate Orthodox Church, and Motomachi Catholic Church are all within easy walking distance. The views of Hakodate Bay from the slopes are superb.

Mt. Hakodate Observation Deck

Night View & Scenery

19:00–21:00

The 334m summit of Mt. Hakodate offers a view that is difficult to match anywhere in Japan. Hakodate is built on a narrow tombolo — a strip of land connected to the mainland — which means the city is flanked by sea on both sides, creating a stunning hourglass shape when viewed from above at night. Ranked as one of the world's great night views, the summit is accessed by ropeway in about 3 minutes (return ¥1,800). Arrive before sunset to see the panorama evolve as night falls.

Goryokaku Fort & Tower

History & Sightseeing

10:00–12:00

Completed in 1866, Goryokaku was Japan's first Western-style fortification, designed in the shape of a five-pointed star. It was the site of the Battle of Hakodate (1868–1869), the final conflict of the Boshin War. The 107m Goryokaku Tower offers a full aerial view of the star-shaped moat — a remarkable sight. In spring, about 1,600 cherry trees bloom inside the fort walls, making it one of the best cherry blossom spots in Hokkaido. Tower admission ¥500; Goryokaku Park is free.

The hillside district at the foot of Mt. Hakodate is home to one of the most evocative collections of Meiji and Taisho-era Western-style buildings in Japan — churches, consulates, and merchants' houses that speak to Hakodate's history as an international port. The Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall (1910), the Hakodate Orthodox Church (rebuilt 1916), and Motomachi Catholic Church are all within easy walking distance.
