Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region and a city steeped in the legacy of Date Masamune, the celebrated warlord of the Warring States period. Just 35 minutes by train from Sendai Station, Matsushima Bay — with its roughly 260 pine-clad islands — is counted among Japan's three most celebrated scenic views. The National Treasure Zuiganji Temple, rebuilt by Masamune in the early 17th century, stands at the heart of the bay. Combine this with panoramic views from Sendai Castle ruins and a dinner of thick-cut chargrilled beef tongue (gyutan), and you have one of Tohoku's finest one-day itineraries.

Matsushima — one of Japan's three great views
Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture is dotted with around 260 islands of twisted pine trees and jagged rock, earning it a place among Japan's three most celebrated scenic views (Nihon Sankei). A 50-minute bay cruise offers a perspective unavailable from the shore, and the view at dusk from Godaido Shrine is particularly memorable.
Zuiganji Temple — a National Treasure built by Date Masamune
Founded in 828 and rebuilt in 1609 by Date Masamune, Zuiganji is the most important Zen temple in the Tohoku region. The main hall is a National Treasure, decorated with Masamune-era painted sliding screens. Admission ¥700.
Panoramic views from Sendai Castle ruins
Perched high on Aoba Hill, the ruins of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) offer sweeping views over the city and the Zao mountain range. The equestrian statue of Date Masamune is one of the most photographed sights in Tohoku.
Gyutan — Sendai's famous beef tongue
Sendai's signature dish: thick-cut beef tongue, chargrilled to perfection and served with barley rice and oxtail soup. The neighbourhood around Sendai Station has numerous specialist restaurants, making it the perfect way to end the day.
