Sapporo, Hokkaido's largest city, is the perfect base for a 3-day itinerary combining city sightseeing and coastal charm. Famous for ramen, Genghis Khan (jingisukan) barbecue, and soup curry, the city also boasts Odori Park, the historic Clock Tower, and the vibrant Susukino entertainment district. On day two, the seaside city of Otaru is just 35 minutes by train — its stone warehouses lining the famous canal, glass craft shops, and fresh seafood markets make for a full and memorable day. Hokkaido's food culture alone is reason enough to make the trip.

ここが狙い目
Start with Odori Park and the Clock Tower — the heart of Sapporo
Odori Park stretches 1.5km through the centre of the city and transforms with the seasons: beer gardens in summer, illuminations and the famous Snow Festival in winter. The nearby Sapporo Clock Tower, built in 1878, is Hokkaido's most recognisable landmark and a designated Important Cultural Property.
Stroll along the Otaru Canal and historic warehouse district
Stone warehouses built during Meiji and Taisho era line the Otaru Canal, which was completed in 1923. Now repurposed as restaurants and shops, they create one of Japan's most distinctive townscapes. After sunset, gas lanterns cast a warm glow over the water.
Fresh Hokkaido seafood at Otaru Sankaku Market
Directly beside JR Otaru Station, this compact local market is packed with Hokkaido's finest — hairy crab, sea urchin, salmon roe, and scallops. The market restaurants serve seafood rice bowls and grilled shellfish at very reasonable prices.
Susukino at night — ramen, jingisukan, and soup curry
Japan's northernmost entertainment district, Susukino is the hub of Sapporo's nightlife and food scene. Ramen Alley gathers legendary miso, soy sauce, and salt ramen shops in a narrow lane. Nearby, Hokkaido's famous jingisukan lamb barbecue and rich soup curry round out a perfect Hokkaido night.

Built in 1878 as the drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, the Clock Tower is an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
