Hakone, just 85 minutes by Romancecar from Shinjuku, is the premier hot spring resort in the Kanto region. The area was born from a massive volcanic eruption around 3,000 years ago, and has been a beloved retreat for Shogunate officials and literary figures alike since the Edo period. The Hakone Checkpoint, established in 1618 to control the flow of 'guns in, women out' along the Tokaido highway, still stands at the lakeside as a reminder of that era. Hakone Shrine, venerated by Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, adds another layer of living history. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure as you hop between mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, and sightseeing cruise. With the volcanic landscape of Owakudani, views of Mt. Fuji across Lake Ashi, and Japan's first open-air art museum opened in 1969 — there's more than enough to fill an exciting day. Winter to early spring (December–February) offers the clearest views of Mt. Fuji, while autumn (October–November) brings golden pampas grass at Sengokuhara. This itinerary guides you efficiently from Hakone-Yumoto through Hakone's highlights in a single day — the key is to focus on 3–4 spots rather than trying to do everything at once.

Scenic rides on the mountain railway and ropeway
Riding from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora and on to Owakudani by mountain railway and ropeway is a wildly popular route. The train's three switchbacks on the steep gradient are a thrill in themselves, and on a clear day you can spot Mt. Fuji from near Owakudani.
Experience an active volcano up close at Owakudani
Born from an eruption about 3,000 years ago, Owakudani is still an active volcanic zone where white smoke billows from fumaroles. The famous black eggs (5 for ¥500) cooked in sulfurous hot spring water come with a local legend: eat one and you'll live 7 more years.
Enjoy panoramic views of Mt. Fuji on a Lake Ashi cruise
Lake Ashi, formed by volcanic activity around 3,000 years ago, is Kanagawa's largest lake. The pirate ship cruise connecting Togendai, Moto-Hakone, and Hakone-machi offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji — and the Hakone Shrine torii gate is visible from the water too.
Art and nature at the Hakone Open-Air Museum
Opened in 1969 as Japan's first open-air museum, the 70,000 m² grounds are dotted with around 120 sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin, and other leading artists. The Picasso Pavilion houses some 300 works, and a foot bath is also on site.

The gateway to Hakone, Hakone-Yumoto is a lively hot spring town packed with ryokan, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Watanabe Bakery, founded in 1891, is famous for its freshly baked Onsen Stew Bread (¥650). Hatsuhana Soba, established in 1934, serves Jinenjo soba bound with only wild yam and egg — no water — a uniquely local dish. Free foot bath spots are dotted around Yumoto Bridge, perfect for a quick soak before setting off.
10:45–12:30
Japan's first open-air museum, opened in 1969. Spread across 70,000 m² of gardens, the grounds display over 120 outdoor sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin, and other renowned artists. The Picasso Pavilion houses around 300 works, and a foot bath café is also on site. The museum is directly connected to the Hakone Tozan Railway's Chokoku-no-Mori Station. Admission: ¥1,600 for adults (discount with Hakone Free Pass).
(Side trip in Gora area)
Opened in 1952, this is Hakone's oldest museum, showcasing Japanese ceramics from the Jomon period through medieval times. The highlight is the moss garden 'Senkyo', carpeted in around 130 species of moss and acclaimed as a spectacular autumn foliage site. Discounts apply with the Hakone Free Pass. Pairs well with nearby Gora Park, and takes about 45–60 minutes to explore.
14:00–14:45
A volcanic zone created by ancient eruptions, where white steam and hydrogen sulfide gas still billow from multiple fumaroles. The famous black eggs (¥500 for 5) are cooked in sulfurous hot spring water — their shells turn black in the process — and come with the local legend that eating one adds 7 years to your life. Always check the Hakone town website for any entry restrictions before you go, as volcanic activity can close access without warning.
(Recommended Sept–Nov)
One of Hakone's most iconic autumn landscapes, where golden pampas grass stretches across a vast meadow designated as a Kanagawa Prefectural Natural Monument. A wooden boardwalk trail winds through the grass. The nearest bus stop is Sengoku (about 5 minutes on foot). Early morning light gives the most dramatic photos. Outside of autumn, this spot has little to offer — swap it for Pola Museum instead.

(When visiting Sengokuhara area)
A contemporary art museum nestled in the forests of Sengokuhara, home to one of Japan's largest collections of Western paintings — Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, and other Impressionist masters. Most of the building is built underground, blending seamlessly into the surrounding beech forest. The Forest Walk trail offers a seasonal nature experience alongside the art. Admission: ¥1,800 (Hakone Free Pass discount applies). Allow about 2 hours.
15:00–16:00
Kanagawa's largest lake, formed by volcanic activity some 3,000 years ago. The sightseeing cruise (pirate ship) connecting Togendai, Moto-Hakone, and Hakone-machi ports is a classic Hakone experience included with the Hakone Free Pass. The panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and surrounding mountains from the lake is simply breathtaking. Morning to early afternoon gives the best chance of seeing Mt. Fuji clearly — clouds tend to gather in the afternoon.
16:00–17:00
Founded in 757 CE by the monk Mangan, this historic shrine has long been venerated by powerful figures including Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, earning its reputation as the chief guardian shrine of the Kanto region. The 'Torii of Peace' at the lakeside was erected in 1952 to commemorate Crown Prince Akihito's investiture and the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Arriving early in the morning is the best way to get photos without crowds.
(After Hakone Shrine)
Established by the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1618 as a strategic checkpoint along the Tokaido highway. Travelers were subject to strict inspection under the rule of 'guns in, women out,' helping maintain the balance of power throughout the Edo period. Restored to its Edo-era appearance in 2007, the complex allows visitors to see both the reconstructed buildings and actual excavated remains. Admission: ¥500 (Hakone Free Pass discount). About 40 minutes to explore, and just 5 minutes on foot from Hakone-machi Port.
17:00–18:00
Hakone has many hot spring facilities open to day visitors. Tenzan Tojikyo in the Hakone-Yumoto area is a popular choice, offering natural flowing outdoor baths (¥1,400 for adults) with towel rental available — no need to bring your own. Building a one-hour soak into the end of your itinerary makes the journey home noticeably more comfortable. Check wait times at the entrance during the busy 17:00–18:00 window on weekends.
