Tokyo Tower (Japan Radio Tower) was completed in 1958 at a height of 333 metres — at the time the tallest self-supporting steel structure in the world, surpassing the Eiffel Tower at 324 metres. Built as a symbol of Japan's postwar recovery and rapid economic growth, it has stood for over 60 years as one of Tokyo's most recognisable landmarks alongside Skytree. The Main Deck at 150 metres and the Top Deck at 250 metres offer panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge, and on a clear day, Mt Fuji.

ここが狙い目
A Symbol of Japan's Postwar Recovery
Completed in 1958 (Showa 33), Tokyo Tower (Japan Radio Tower) stands 333 metres tall and weighs 4,000 tonnes. At the time of construction it surpassed even the Eiffel Tower (324 m) in height, embodying the energy of Japan's rapid postwar economic growth. Even in the age of Tokyo Skytree, its orange-and-white silhouette retains its own distinct presence as the face of Showa-era Tokyo.
The Classic Shot from Shiba Park and Zojoji Temple
The most iconic view of Tokyo Tower is from the Shiba Park side. Framing the tower through the Sangedatsumon gate of Zojoji Temple — the ancestral temple of the Tokugawa shogunate — is the defining Tokyo Tower photograph. Pairing this shot with the evening illumination at night produces a compelling combination.
The Nightly Illumination Colours Tokyo's Skyline
From sunset until 23:00, Tokyo Tower is illuminated in orange or white, with seasonal and event-based colour changes under the 'Diamond Veil' special lighting. The tower is also visible from Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba, and across much of the bay area, making it a constant presence in any nighttime view of Tokyo.
Views of Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge from the Main Deck
From the Main Deck at 150 metres, you can take in Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba, Tokyo Skytree, and the high-rise clusters of Shinjuku and Shibuya in a single sweep. The Top Deck Tour (250 m, separate fee) offers an even broader 360-degree panorama of the city spreading in every direction.

From the Main Deck at 150 metres, Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba, Skytree, Roppongi Hills, and the Shinjuku skyscraper cluster are all visible in a single panoramic sweep — almost every landmark in the city. A section of the floor is glass, with a "Look Down Window" through which you can stare straight down to the street 150 metres below.
Shiba Park and Zojoji Temple — the family temple of six Tokugawa shoguns including Ieyasu and Hidetada — spread out directly at the base of the tower, and looking up at Tokyo Tower through the black Sangedatsumon gate is one of the most photographed compositions in Japanese travel photography. After dark, the temple grounds are softly lit and the contrasting colours of the illuminated tower above create a genuinely striking atmosphere.
The standard "Landmark Light" in orange illuminates the tower from sunset to 23:00. In addition, the "Diamond Veil" special lighting — displaying white, blue, pink, and other colours in sync with seasons and events — is activated throughout the year. At 23:00, all lights go out simultaneously, and those gathered beneath the tower often count down and cheer together at the moment of extinguishing.
