MATSUSHIMA / MIYAGI

Matsushima Bay Cruise

A 50-Minute Sail through One of Japan's Three Views

260+ pine-studded islands, seagulls eating from your hand, and a bay landscape that shifts with every minute of the cruise — Matsushima seen from the water

SCROLL

The Matsushima Bay Cruise is the most popular way to experience Matsushima — one of Japan's Three Views — with a 50-minute loop of the bay's more than 260 islands departing from Matsushima Kaigan Pier. The boat threads between Nio-jima, Futago-jima, Kane-jima, and other distinctively shaped rocky islands, with on-board commentary throughout. Seagulls flock alongside from the moment of departure, eating Kappa Ebisen shrimp snacks directly from passengers' hands — one of the most memorable parts of any visit to Matsushima. The view from water level is a completely different experience from the shore.

ここが狙い目

Seeing the 260+ Islands from the Water — an Experience Unlike the Shore

Matsushima Bay is dotted with more than 260 small islands. The view from land is beautiful, but seeing the pine-covered rocky outcrops, sea caves, and natural arches from water level — at the same height as the islands themselves — gives the landscape a completely different sense of scale and presence.

Feeding the Seagulls — Kappa Ebisen at the Ready

One of the most beloved parts of the Matsushima cruise is feeding seagulls from the deck. From the moment the boat leaves the pier, gulls flock alongside and will eat directly from an outstretched hand. Kappa Ebisen (shrimp snacks) are the classic seagull food and are sold at shops near the pier.

A 50-Minute Loop of Matsushima Bay

The sightseeing cruise departs from Matsushima Kaigan Pier and tours the bay's main islands in about 50 minutes. Nio-jima (with its distinctive arched rock formation), Futago-jima, Kane-jima, and Toriuchi-jima appear in succession, with on-board commentary for each.

One of Japan's Three Views — Best Seen from the Sea

Matsushima is one of Japan's Three Views (Nihon Sankei), alongside Ama-no-hashidate and Miyajima. Its full beauty only becomes clear from the water: the islands shifting shape as the boat moves, the contrast of green pines against white rock, and the ever-changing composition across the bay — a living scroll painting.

What to See

The Islands and the Route

The cruise departs from Matsushima Kaigan Pier and tours the bay's most distinctive islands. Nio-jima — a 10 m rocky outcrop with a famous arched hole through its centre — is one of the first highlights. Futago-jima (Twin Islands), Kane-jima (Bell Island), and Toriuchi-jima follow, each with a unique shape, with on-board commentary at every stop. The 50-minute loop offers a varied succession of views and a real sense of the bay's geography.

Seagull Feeding — the Cruise's Famous Attraction

The moment the boat leaves the pier, dozens of seagulls begin flying alongside. Hold Kappa Ebisen out from the deck railing and the gulls will swoop in and take the snack directly from your hand. The experience of a seagull landing inches from your fingers is a highlight families with children in particular rave about. Kappa Ebisen are sold near the pier and sometimes on the boat itself.

Types of Cruise Boats

Several companies operate from Matsushima Kaigan Pier with the standard 50-minute bay loop, as well as routes connecting Matsushima with Shiogama or Ishinomaki. Large sightseeing vessels hold around 250 passengers and have shops and toilets; smaller boats for fewer passengers are also available. On fine days, the open deck gives the best views and the freshest breeze.
