Shinsekai is a distinctive downtown neighbourhood in Osaka's Tennoji area that has retained the atmosphere of the early Showa period. With the 108 m Tsutenkaku Tower at its centre, the area is packed with kushikatsu restaurants, shooting galleries, and retro eateries that make it feel like a world apart — a version of Osaka that has not been softened for mass tourism. Kushikatsu originated here and is now famous nationwide for its strict no-double-dipping rule.

Tsutenkaku Tower and a Neighbourhood Frozen in Showa
The 108 m Tsutenkaku Tower is Shinsekai's defining landmark. Around it, retro restaurants, shooting galleries, and game centres from the early Showa era create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Osaka — a time-slip into postwar popular culture.
The Birthplace of Kushikatsu
Shinsekai is widely regarded as the origin of kushikatsu — skewered and deep-fried ingredients that have become one of Osaka's most iconic foods. Long-established restaurants packed into the neighbourhood serve beef, prawn, cheese, quail eggs, and more, each skewer costing around ¥100–200.
Panoramic Views from Tsutenkaku's Observation Decks
Tsutenkaku's main observation deck sits at 87.5 m above ground, offering 360-degree views of Osaka. The premium "TOP of TSUTENKAKU" level at 94 m features floor-to-ceiling windows for an even more open panorama.
Hands-On Old-School Entertainment
Shooting galleries, pinball (smart ball), and billiards are still in business here — venues from decades past that keep operating. Shinsekai offers a genuine slice of everyday Osaka life that has not been polished for tourists.

The original Tsutenkaku was built in 1912; the current structure is the second generation, completed in 1956, standing 108 m tall (103 m above sea level). The main observation deck "Tenbou Paradise" at 87.5 m offers a 360-degree view of Osaka. The premium "TOP of TSUTENKAKU" level at 94 m is surrounded by windows on all four sides for an even more open view. The Billiken statue — a good-luck charm said to grant wishes if you rub its feet — is a must-see on the way up.
Shinsekai is the acknowledged birthplace of kushikatsu, and long-established restaurants such as Daruma, Yaekatsus, and Yokozuna are still operating in the area. Each skewer costs roughly ¥100–200, making it an affordable way to eat well. Ingredients range from beef and prawn to octopus, cheese, and quail eggs. The shared communal sauce is off-limits for a second dip — use the cabbage leaves to scoop more sauce instead.
On the south side of Tsutenkaku, Janjan Yokocho is a covered arcade around 180 m long. It is a deep pocket of local life — regulars playing shogi and go sit alongside cheap long-established kushikatsu and doteyaki restaurants, and smart ball parlours that have survived from a different era.
