KOBE / MOTOMACHI

Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown)

One of Japan's Three Great Chinatowns — Pork Buns and Street Food in Motomachi

Roshukki's legendary pork buns, 100+ Chinese restaurants, and a Spring Festival spectacular make Nankinmachi one of Kobe's most visited neighbourhoods — just 5 min from Motomachi Station

SCROLL

Kobe Nankinmachi is one of Japan's three great Chinatowns, alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki. In a compact area of approximately 200 m east-west and 110 m north-south, more than 100 Chinese restaurants, street food stalls, and souvenir shops are concentrated. Roshukki's pork buns (founded 1915), pan-fried soup dumplings, black sesame tang yuan, and almond tofu are among the most popular walk-and-eat choices. During the Lunar New Year Spring Festival, dragon and lion dances and a lavish lantern illumination turn Nankinmachi into Kobe's signature winter event.

ここが狙い目

Roشukki's Pork Buns — Kobe's Most Famous Bite

Roshokki (founded 1915) is the shop credited with establishing pork bun (buta-man) culture in Japan. The small, approx. 8 cm buns have thin, steamed dough packed with juicy pork filling, and reliably draw a queue. They are sold in multiples of three and are best eaten on the spot at the nearby plaza.

Over 100 Restaurants and Street Food Stalls

One of Japan's three great Chinatowns — alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki — Kobe Nankinmachi packs more than 100 Chinese restaurants, street food stalls, tea shops, and souvenir stores into a compact area. Pan-fried soup dumplings, Peking duck, black sesame tang yuan, and almond tofu are among the popular walk-and-eat choices.

Spring Festival (Shunsetsu) — Dragon Dance and Lantern Illuminations

During the Chinese Lunar New Year (Spring Festival, typically late January to mid-February), the entire district is lit up with red-and-gold lanterns and hosts dragon dances, lion dances, and firecrackers in a full-scale celebration. This is Kobe's largest winter event and draws both tourists and local residents.

Walkable from Motomachi — Well Positioned for Kobe Sightseeing

Just 5 min on foot south of JR / Hanshin Motomachi Station, Nankinmachi is a natural hub for Kobe's port-side sightseeing. Heading west from here leads to Meriken Park and the Kobe Port area; heading north brings you back to the Kitano Ijinkan (foreign settlement); heading east leads to Sannomiya, the city centre.

What to See & Eat

Street Food — Pork Buns, Fried Soup Dumplings, Peking Duck

Nankinmachi's walk-and-eat food is wide-ranging. Roshukki's pork buns are the essential stop, but beyond them you will find crispy-bottomed pan-fried soup dumplings, sliced Peking duck with sauce, lightly sweet almond tofu, aromatic black sesame tang yuan (glutinous rice balls), and sticky lotus leaf rice (chimaki). Each stall sells in small, snack-sized portions, making it easy to work through several in one visit.

Nankinmachi Plaza

The central Nankinmachi Plaza features a lion dance sculpture and a Chinese-style pavilion, and functions as the main resting and eating spot in the district. Long-established Chinese restaurants serving Kobe-origin Chinese cuisine, Sichuan cooking, and Cantonese food surround the plaza, and several offer sit-down lunch and dinner courses for those wanting a full meal.

Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival Events

During the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival), Nankinmachi is draped in red-and-gold lanterns and the district hosts dragon dances, lion dances, and firecracker performances — the kind of scale that genuinely surprises visitors who have never experienced it before. It is Kobe's largest seasonal event and draws local residents as well as tourists. The Mid-Autumn Festival (15th night of the lunar 8th month) features moon-viewing lantern illuminations.
