Owakudani is an active volcanic zone created by an eruption approximately 3,000 years ago. White steam plumes rise continuously from fumaroles scattered across a starkly beautiful landscape, and the sharp scent of sulphur fills the air. The signature black eggs — known as kuro-tamago — are boiled in the geothermal hot spring pools until the shells turn jet-black from sulphur compounds. Paired with the legend that each egg extends your lifespan by seven years, they have become Hakone's most iconic snack. On clear days, a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji stretches out directly ahead from the observation deck.

The Raw Power of an Active Volcano
Born from an eruption roughly 3,000 years ago, Owakudani is an active volcanic zone where white plumes still rise from fumaroles and the air carries a sharp sulphurous scent — a visceral reminder that the Earth is still very much alive.
Black Eggs (Kuro-Tamago)
Eggs boiled in the geothermal hot spring pools turn jet-black from the sulphur reacting with the shells. Legend says eating one extends your lifespan by seven years.
A Front-Row View of Mt. Fuji
On clear days, Mt. Fuji rises majestically directly in front of the observation deck. Early morning and late autumn through early winter (November–March) offer the sharpest views before haze builds up.
Central Stop on the Hakone Ropeway
Owakudani sits midway along the Hakone Ropeway between Sounzan and Togendai, making it the scenic core of the classic Hakone Golden Route.

Owakudani (Hakone Ropeway)
Owakudani occupies the crater area of the Hakone volcano. Fumaroles still dot the terrain formed by eruptions some 3,000 years ago, sending up thick white plumes and filling the air with a sulphurous bite. Walking the maintained trail while steam vents hiss just meters away is one of the most visceral geological experiences in Hakone. On clear days, the observation deck frames Mt. Fuji in a sweeping panorama.
The eggs are slow-boiled in the volcanic hot spring pools until sulphur compounds in the water react with the shells and turn them jet-black. Sold only at Owakudani Kurotamago-kan (¥500 for 5, maximum 2 bags per person), they are one of Japan's most distinctive regional snacks. Crack one open to reveal a perfectly normal white egg inside — the contrast is half the fun. The legend that each egg adds seven years to your life has made them popular with visitors of all ages.
At roughly 1,000 m elevation, Owakudani's observation deck is one of the best vantage points in the Hakone area for Mt. Fuji. The mountain is clearest in winter through early spring (November–March) when the air is driest. By afternoon, clouds and haze tend to build — aim for an early-morning visit if Fuji views are a priority.
