HAKONE / LAKE ASHI

Lake Ashi & Hakone Pirate Ship

A Lake Cruise with Mt. Fuji on the Horizon

Sail the volcanic caldera lake on a galleon-style cruise ship and take in Hakone's most iconic panorama

SCROLL

Lake Ashi is Hakone's most celebrated scenic spot — a caldera lake whose clear water reflects the silhouette of Mt. Fuji on calm days. The Hakone Pirate Ship (Hakone Kaizoku-sen) connects Togendai Port, Moto-Hakone Port, and Hakone-machi Port in a series of colourful cruises across the lake. The panorama of lake and mountain from the open deck is one of the defining images of Hakone, and the cruise serves as the centrepiece of the famous Hakone Golden Route loop.

ここが狙い目

Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi — A Panoramic View Worth the Trip

On a clear day the surface of the lake reflects a perfect inverted image of Mt. Fuji. The reflection is clearest on calm, wind-free mornings. The winter-to-early-spring period (November–March) tends to offer the best visibility.

The Hakone Pirate Ship — a Lake Cruise with a View

The eye-catching pirate ships connect Togendai Port, Moto-Hakone Port, and Hakone-machi Port. The crossing takes 20–30 minutes one way. The open deck gives unobstructed views across the lake.

Included with the Hakone Freepass

The Hakone Freepass (2 days ¥6,100) covers the pirate ship fare. Combined with the ropeway and mountain railway, it enables the famous "Golden Route" loop around Hakone with a single pass.

Wakasagi and Local Lake-Side Food

Wakasagi (pond smelt) are in season from winter through spring. Restaurants along the shore serve the fish as tempura or deep-fried, and eating fresh lake fish with a view of the water is one of the simple pleasures of Lake Ashi.

What to See

Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi

The view of Mt. Fuji from Lake Ashi is one of Kanagawa's finest. On still mornings, the lake surface acts as a mirror, producing the famous "inverted Fuji" reflection. The view is generally clearest from November through early spring, when the air is cold and dry. Photographs of Mt. Fuji from the pirate ship deck make for one of the most memorable souvenirs of any Hakone trip.

The Pirate Ships — On Deck and Below

Three ships operate on the lake: Royal II, Victory, and Vasa. Each has its own distinct design, but all share the same galleon-style exterior. The ships have an indoor cabin and an open deck. On a fine day the deck is the better spot for views and photos; in colder months, move between the two as you please. Dress warmly from winter through early spring.

Wakasagi Fish Cuisine at Lake Ashi

Wakasagi (pond smelt) are fished from Lake Ashi from winter through spring. Restaurants around the lake serve them as tempura or deep-fried — crispy, fragrant, and best eaten fresh. Eateries are clustered around Moto-Hakone Port and Hakone-machi Port, making either a convenient place to eat before or after your cruise.
