ここが狙い目
Experience the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom at Shuri Castle
Perched on a hill above Naha, Shuri Castle served as the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its distinctive architecture — a fusion of Chinese and Japanese styles — includes the iconic Shurei Gate and the vermilion-painted main hall. Despite ongoing restoration work after the 2019 fire, there's still plenty to see and learn about Ryukyu history.
Be awestruck by whale sharks at the Churaumi Aquarium
The Kuroshio Sea tank at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the world's largest, and features whale sharks and manta rays gliding gracefully through the water. The surrounding Ocean Expo Park has free dolphin shows, making it an ideal spot for the whole family.
Kouri Island's emerald-green waters
Across the 1,960m Kouri Bridge lies Kouri Island, whose beaches boast some of the clearest water in all of Okinawa. Heart Rock on Tinu Beach — two naturally heart-shaped boulders — is a hugely popular photo spot. The island is also great for snorkeling and easily combined with a visit to the aquarium.
Reflect on peace at the southern war sites
Himeyuri Monument and Peace Memorial Park are important places that preserve the history of the Battle of Okinawa. Through survivor testimonies and historical materials, you can learn about the tragedy of war. Connecting with Okinawa's history as well as its natural beauty adds real depth to the journey.
